Green Ladle lists holiday order deadline

LEWISTON — The Green Ladle, the Lewiston Regional Technical Center’s culinary arts school, will take holiday pick-up orders through Monday, Dec. 18. 

Pick-ups can be scheduled between 10 a.m. and noon Friday, Dec. 22, or between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at 156 East Ave.

Calvary opens warming center

LEWISTON — Calvary United Methodist Church will its warming center open on from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10.

Hot beverages, snacks, games and reading materials will be available.

Those attending should use the garden entrance on Bartlett Street.

Candle lighting remembers children

AUBURN — The annual Worldwide Candle Lighting, which remembers the loss of children, will take place at Sunday, Dec. 10, in all time zones around the world.

At 7 p.m. in every time zone, candles are lit for the loss of children around the world. When the candles are extinguished in one time zone, they are lit in the next time zone so that candles burn for twenty-four hours in remembrance of children who were lost but will never be forgotten.

The Maine Candle Lighting will take place at the East Auburn Baptist Church at 560 Park Ave. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. with the official candle lighting at 7 p.m. There will be music and readings as well as a short explanation of the history of The Compassionate Friends, a support group for grieving parents.

Following the ceremony, there will be a social time with snacks and conversation. All are welcome. Parents of deceased children should bring a photo of the child or an object of meaning to display on the remembrance table.

Drumming group making a beat

LEWISTON — The Hand Drumming Group plays from 1 to 3 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month, at Trinity Church, 247 Bates St. 

All levels and styles of drummers can play, and they can bring their own instrument or try one of the club’s drums. The cost to play is by donation. 

Girl Scouts enrollment offered

MECHANIC FALLS — Girl Scouts of Maine will host a Discover Girl Scout events for potential members and volunteers at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at Elm Street School, 128 Elm St.

Lakeside to meet before recess

WALES — Lakeside Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet Tuesday, Dec. 12, before going into recess until Tuesday, March 13.

Winthrop’s Emma Conrad wins scholarship

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Emma Walsh Conrad, a junior accounting major at the University of New Haven, has been awarded the Edmund M. Autuori Scholarship, which annually goes to one accounting student at the school who demonstrates scholastic excellence and financial need.

Conrad, a 2016 graduate of Winthrop High School, holds several student leadership positions. She works as a career peer advisor at UNH’s Career Development Center, was appointed to a position on the campus Student Conduct Board and is vice president of the club field hockey team. She is also a member of the campus Accounting Society.

She is scheduled to graduate from the University of New Haven in the spring of 2019. Conrad intends to attain a master’s degree in business administration before beginning a career in accounting, specializing in the investigative field of forensic accounting.

Food pantry seeks donations 

AUBURN — The High Street Congregational Church Food Pantry has ongoing needs for the following items: peanut butter, canned vegetables, soup, canned past, canned meats, canned fruit, dry cereal, baking items, soup, crackers and toilet paper.

Auburn United Methodist Church collects items for the pantry. Donations may be brought to 439 Park Ave.

Pinochle, pitch players welcome

LEWISTON — Pinochle and pitch card games for seniors are played weekly through May at the Lewiston Armory, 65 Central Ave.

New players are always welcome. Pitch is played at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays. Pinochle is at 1 p.m. on Thursdays. Refresher courses are available in both categories.

The armory is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Players must become a member to participate.
