Raymond Desmarais was honored by Beacon Hospice on Jan. 3 for his service in the military. His daughter and granddaughter were present for the ceremony. Desmarais received a handmade American flag, a certificate of honor and an American flag lapel pin. Desmarais said he was proud to have been in the Air Force, but even more proud of the fact he was a “medic,” having served in many VA hospitals, ending in Syracuse, New York. Once home Dr. Edwin Kay took him under his wing, guiding him and encouraging him to continue his education in medicine. Family responsibility and finances ended his dream, but he never stopped loving telling stories of “his” many patients, along with the pride he had in knowing Kay had shown faith in him. From left are Tiffany Fortier, Desmarais and Susan Fortier. Desmarais, of Lisbon, died Thursday, Jan. 25, in Lewiston.
