NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen has voted unanimously to allow the Provider Agency Committee to allocate $20,000 among social service agencies that requested money.
Committee member Mary Lou St. John asked selectmen at their meeting Thursday if there is a way to change the rules at the annual town meeting so voters can increase the amount of money to be allocated to outside agencies.
“I’m not saying we need $100,000 or anything like that,” she said. “but even $30,000 makes a huge difference.”
Town Manager Dennis Lajoie said that for the past two years, the town has allowed the committee to allocate $20,000, and in 2015, the committee allocated $30,000.
“I remember when we found out that the town was going to give us $30,000, it felt like we fell into a gold mine,” St. John said.
Selectman Russell Newcomb said he wouldn’t have a problem with the committee arguing for a higher amount of money from the Budget Committee when they begin meeting on the 2018-19 budget.
