BANGOR — A judge has convicted a longtime suspect for the murder of 16-year-old Joyce McLain, who disappeared while jogging near her East Millinocket home in 1980.
The case baffled investigators for years. No physical evidence was ever found to tie Fournier to the crime scene, but prosecutors say he confessed multiple times over the years. He was arrested in March 2016.
Fournier led police to the area where McLain’s body was found behind Schenck High School. Police interviewed him 22 times since the murder, beginning in 1980.
Fournier’s defense lawyer argued that his memories are unreliable and that the state have not met its burden of proof.
The trial ended earlier this month. Fournier waved his right to a jury so Murray has been preparing her decision since then.
A crowd, including McLain’s family members, had gathered in the courtoom to await the verdict.
