USS Iwo Jima Shipmate’s reunion set
JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA — The USS Iwo Jima (LPH2/LHD7) Shipmate’s Organization reunion has been announced. The reunion will take place from Wednesday to Saturday, Oct. 10 to 13, at the Doubletree Hotel, Jacksonville Riverfront.
The event is for all Ships Company and Embarked Navy and Marine Corps personnel who were on board the LPH2 or LHD7.

Regional Democrats to convene
MINOT — The Minot, Poland, Mechanic Falls Regional Democrats will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at the Minot Town Office.
The meeting will include a session on active listening, a skill used in communication.
Open Observatory Night scheduled
PARIS — The free Monthly Open Observatory Night will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 6 (or Saturday, April 7), weather and road access dependent.
Observatory volunteers will show visitors many winter sky objects, including “star nursery” Orion Nebula, Beehive Cluster, Pleiades and Andromeda Galaxy. Confirm the date before going.

Genealogical society to hear guest speaker
FARMINGTON — The Sandy River Valley Genealogical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 7, featuring Samuel Howes of the Maine State Archives.
Howes will explain the Archives online and onsite record categories and services, with information for those pursuing family history. Among the vast collection are vital records, court records, naturalization records, military and probate records, which can provide assistance for breaking through genealogical brick walls. The presentation is free and open to the public.
The society also will conduct a brief business meeting before Howes’ presentation.
The group usually meets at the Farmington Public Library, but this meeting will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ LDS Family Search Center, 141 Woodfield Drive.

‘The Last Jedi’ showing at Deering Center
PARIS — The Paris Public Library is showing “The Last Jedi” on Saturday, April 7, at the Deering Memorial Community Center.
Star Wars characters will visit from 2 to 2:30 p.m. for a meet-and-greet with fans and photo opportunities. The movie will be shown from 2:30 to 5 p.m.. The PG-13 movie is being shown free, thanks to the library’s friends group, the Seneca Club.

Texas Hold’em Tournament in Harrison
HARRISON — The Harrison Lions Club will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, April 7, at the VFW Hall, Waterford Road. There will be a $55 entry fee. Doors will open at noon, with starting time at 1 p.m. There will be food and refreshments.
The proceeds will be used to help support local children’s programs such as eye screening for school-age children, Christmas for kids and scholarships.
AMVETS to have live music on Saturday
JAY — Music by Sharon Hood and the Dixon Road Band will play from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at the AMVETS.
