NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen voted Thursday night to have Town Manager Dennis Lajoie schedule a meeting with the Norway Paris Solid Waste Board to discuss an error in the previous year’s budget.

Chairman Warren Sessions Jr., who also serves as manager of the Norway Paris Transfer Station, said it recently came to the attention of the Norway Paris Solid Waste Board that there was a “mix-up when it came to last year’s solid waste budget.”

He said that the town of Norway voted to raise $262,000 for the transfer station, while the town of Paris voted to raise $250,000.

The towns have an agreement on the transfer station stating that if one of the two towns votes in a lower amount, both towns will pay the lower amount, according to Sessions.

“We just found out during this process that Norway has been paying too much this year,” Sessions said. “The transfer station has been operating as if they’ve been getting an extra $12,000, but we should have been paying $12,000 less.”

Sessions suggested that the Norway Board of Selectmen meet with the Norway Paris Solid Waste Board to figure out how to solve the problem.

Selectman Russell Newcomb pointed out that two years ago, Paris also voted to approve less money than Norway, and “we ended up budgeting the additional money we had raised into a reserve account.”

Sessions said that because the transfer station has been spending the money as if they had an extra $12,000, “there’s a concern that we could be short.”

Lajoie agreed to reach out to the Norway Paris Solid Waste Board and schedule a meeting with the Board of Selectmen.

In other matters, the Board of Selectmen voted to appoint Eric Ross to the Finance Committee.

In his application, Ross wrote that he has “an interest in becoming a more active participant in my community,” and feels that “this will allow me to pursue that goal.”
