FARMINGTON — Ann Bausum will talk about her career as an author at Devaney, Doak and Garrett Booksellers, 193 Broadway at 6:30 p.m., April 11.

Since 2000 Bausum has written 10 narrative nonfiction books for teens and children, most of them fully illustrated volumes published by National Geographic, as well as done nonfiction titles for adults.

With intelligent and intense focus, she is rewriting for young readers (and older readers as well) the political history of the United States over the past century. Her books treat immigration policy, the Stonewall incident, investigative journalism, women’s suffrage, and the AIDS epidemic. Three volumes on racial discrimination cover the Mississippi freedom rides, James Meredith’s challenge to the south’s segregated educational system, and the Memphis garbage workers’ strike leading to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., fifty years ago this week.

For National Geographic she also has written books on “Stubby the War Dog” and the real life model for Indiana Jones, and authored reference books about the American presidents and the American first ladies. Many of Bausum’s individual books have won awards; more generally, in 2017 the Children’s Book Guild of Washington, D.C., recognized the body of her work by presenting her with its venerable Nonfiction Award.
