AUBURN — City officials are urging residents to get involved in planning the city’s 150th anniversary celebration next year.
Since taking office, Auburn Mayor Jason Levesque has been advocating for a community celebration, and the city is seeking residents and local organizations to be a part of the planning and coordination of city-wide activities.
According to a city news release, the 150th Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee will meet on the last Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Community Room at the Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.
The city is looking for those interested in serving on one of the five work groups: School-Related Events and Programs; City-Wide Events and Programs; Fundraising Efforts; Historical Connections; and Media/Promotional Items.
Former Mayor Jonathan LaBonte is chairman of the 150th Anniversary Committee.
At a recent City Council workshop, Auburn Recreation Director Sabrina Best said there have been three staff meetings and three public meetings so far. She said the group plans to create a logo and a contest to submit logo designs, with a possible unveiling in June.
City Manager Peter Crichton’s proposed budget for next year includes $30,000 in “seed money” for the event, but officials have said the city “will have to raise a lot more through contributions” from sponsorships and local organizations.
