Scholarships available to Maine women
ELLSWORTH — Applications are being accepted at the Maine Community Foundation for the Lydia R. Laurendeau Scholarship Fund.
Established in 2013, the Laurendeau Fund provides scholarship support to women who are graduating seniors from high schools in Maine who are pursuing post-secondary education in either science or engineering at a four-year university. There is a preference for applicants demonstrating an interest and/or actively participating in their Franco-American heritage.
The deadline for applications is June 1. Applications are available at www.mainecf.org.

Pruning apple tree workshop
FARMINGTON — University of Maine Cooperative Extension will hold an apple tree pruning workshop from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the UMaine Extension office, 138 Pleasant St., Suite 1.
The hands-on class will include information on pruning both new and established fruit trees, followed by a demonstration that includes pruning techniques for peach trees and highbush blueberries. UMaine Extension agricultural professional David Fuller will lead the workshop.

College planning workshop announced
WILTON — A free “Essentials of College Planning” workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 16, at the Wilton CareerCenter, 865 Route 2E.
The workshop will introduce people to educational opportunities in general and MEOC services in particular. It will touch on the four steps in the college process: admissions, financial aid, career and study skills.

FARMINGTON — The Winter Farmers Market is held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through May at the Grange Hall, 124 Bridge St.
Church thrift shop is now open
WILTON — The Thrift Shop at the First Congregational Church is now open for business. The hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday and Saturday.
The church is located at 386 Main St in the center of town across from the library. The door is well-marked and the shop is located in the lower level.
Oral history workshop at community center
PARIS — Oral History and Folklore Research will host a free oral history workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Deering Memorial Community Center, 39 Main St.
Participants will learn about oral history techniques such as interviewing skills and sound recording methods. There will also be an introduction to the legal and ethical issues in oral history work.
Oral History and Folklore Research is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the stories and voices of Maine. The workshop is being funded by the Maine State Library.
