AUBURN — A Lewiston man ran into the woods near West Pitch Park on Wednesday after his car was stopped during a police seat belt check.

Dustin Strout, 30, was driving with a suspended license and violating conditions of bail when he was stopped at about 3 p.m. on Center Street, according to police.
Strout fled on foot toward the woods along the Androscoggin River, near the Irving Station. Auburn police combed the woods while police in Lewiston watched their side of the train trestle, but the suspect was not found.
Auburn police officers T.J. Ellis and Justin Richardson continued to search for Strout.
About 90 minutes after the initial traffic stop, an officer reported having spotted the suspect near Oak Street. Several officers descended on the area and another foot chase ensued before Strout was caught, arrested and taken to the Androscoggin County Jail.
In addition to charges of violating bail and driving with a suspended license, he was also arrested on two counts of refusing to submit to arrest.
At the time of his arrest Wednesday, Strout was free on bail after being charged in February with domestic assault.
As part of the yearly Click-it-or-Ticket campaign, police around the country have been targeting drivers who are not wearing seat belts.
It was not immediately clear whether Strout had been buckled up Wednesday afternoon before he allegedly fled.
