Blood drive planned in Winthrop
WINTHROP — There will be a community blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at the St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall, Route 133.
The need for blood in Maine is always critical, so getting the word out is appreciated. The drive is open to all qualifying donors and all are welcome. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-GIVE LIFE. A form of identification is required.
Poker tournament in Sabattus
SABATTUS — Post 135, American Legion, will host a Texas Hold’em tournament on Saturday, June 9, at 40 Island Road.
The event is open to the public. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m., and games will begin at 2 p.m.
Buy-in will be $35, with an optional $5 for high hand. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Call 207-212-2156 for more information.
Community Shredding Day June 9
LEWISTON — Community Shredding Day will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 9, at 184 Webster St.
The event is free, but a monetary donation to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is suggested. Each person is limited to three boxes of materials to be shredded.

Drumming group making a beat
LEWISTON — The Hand Drumming Group plays from 1 to 3 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month, at Trinity Church, 247 Bates St.
All levels and styles of drummers can play, and they can bring their own instrument or try one of the club’s drums. The cost to play is by donation.
IHM Gold Age Club to meet
AUBURN — Immaculate Heart of Mary Golden Age Club for those 50 and older will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, at the Sacred Heart Church hall. The meeting will include lunch games and a swap raffle.
There will be a baked chicken tender meal at noon with ice cream sundaes. Cost is $6.
Those attending should bring an item for the raffle. Reservations are required by June 10 by calling 207-576-4082. New members and guests are always welcome.
Eastern Star meeting
WALES – Lakeside Chapter 60, Order of the Eastern Star will hold its Stated Meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12, at the Grange-Masonic Hall, 322 Centre Road.
The Chapter will honor Father’s Day and Flag Day.
Grace will be said and light refreshments will be provided by Cathy Hunnewell and Violet Gerber after the meeting.

‘Going Native with Plants’ talk
MONMOUTH — Heather McCargo, the founder and director of the Wild Seed Project, will speak at Cumston Library at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, presenting “Going Native with Plants in Your Landscape.”
McCargo will explore gardening with native plants under a variety of different site conditions-sunny moist, sunny dry, shady and acidic woodland. We will look at a diverse collection of native plants for the home landscape, and learn easy techniques for sowing them.
