LISBON — Free cookies? No thanks, say the people of Lisbon.
A man who went to the home of at least three women has roused suspicion after offering a free box of cookies.
“He said, ‘Hi,’ and tried to hand me the box,” said one woman, who reported the encounter on the Lisbon Community Information Facebook page. “I said I was all set and no thank you and off he went with nothing else to say.”
“That guy came to our house on Amalfi Street Sunday afternoon,” wrote another, “and he was carrying a box of snacky looking things — Cheez-Its and stuff like that. We didn’t answer the door, he left and went to the next-door neighbor and left the street after that.”
A Bowdoin woman said a man offering cookies visited her home weeks ago.
They might seem like odd, innocuous occurrences if not for the random and obscure nature of the visits.
One woman reported that a group of people was going around Durham about a month ago and offering crackers. A woman in Shapleigh described a visit in which a man first offered free cookies and then said he wanted to speak to the woman’s family about “special things for homeowners.”
That cookie peddler, like the others, went on his way when asked to leave.
One woman said she called police to report the suspicious offer, although because the man left when asked to, it was unclear whether any crime was committed.
