AUBURN — Lewiston urologist Joel S. Olstein, 72, was arrested at his Auburn home Thursday night and charged with domestic assault.
At about 8 p.m., police went to 48 Waterview Drive on the east shore of Taylor Pond where Olstein lives with his wife. He was arrested at the scene.
On Friday, police said only that the doctor was charged with assaulting an adult family member.
Olstein was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail but was released on bail a short time later. His bail conditions include staying away from the home on Waterview Drive.
According to online medical sources, Olstein is affiliated with St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and has an office in Lewiston. In 2001, he pleaded guilty to health care fraud for billing insurance companies for free samples of a drug used to treat prostate cancer. He was sentenced to a year of probation and fined $20,000.
Editor’s note: On Jan. 25, 2019, this case was filed in Androscoggin County Criminal Court for four months with the understanding that, if there were no further criminal charges during that time frame, the charge of domestic assault would be dismissed at the end of the four-month period. The dismissal was entered in the court on June 3.
