Science show at CV library

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The Carrabassett Valley Public Library will present a program on sound by Mad Science of Maine at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25.

The show, Sounds Like Science, will explore sound as it travels through solids, liquids and gases. Attendees will see how hot sound can be as it rises out of the Singing Pipe and flaming didgeridoos. They’ll see how hilarious sound waves can be when they are manipulated using a sound machine. The Mad Science conductor will also recreate an indoor thunderstorm.

Texas Hold’em Tournament

HARRISON — The Harrison Lions Club will hold its Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, July 28, at the VFW Hall on Waterford Road.

There will be a $55 entry fee. Doors will open at noon with starting a time of 1 p.m. Players may bring beverages, and food and refreshments will be available.

The proceeds will be used to help support local programs such as senior dinners, Christmas for kids, and scholarships. 

History to be shown through postcards

NORWAY — University of Southern Maine professor Libby Bischof will share Maine history through postcards from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the Norway Memorial Library on Main Street.

Bischof, a 19th-century American cultural historian, specializes in the history of photography, particularly in Maine.

Attendees may also enjoy a photographic display in the reference room, “A Step Back in Time: Norway Lake and Village” and a glass case display of vintage postcards of Norway places called “Greetings from Norway, Maine.” Both displays are loaned from Norway Historical Society.

Garden club to see Wilton garden

WILTON — Mt. Blue Area Garden Club members and guests will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Tom Saviello’s garden, 60 Applegate Lane. This is a postponement from the July 17 meeting.

Saviello’s home is in the middle of the old Keene Morrison apple orchard, which acts as a backdrop for his gardens, blueberry bushes, strawberry patch, raspberry plants and cherry, peach and apricot trees. The apples and flowers are all past winners at the Farmington Fair.

The meeting will begin with a tour of the gardens. Hostesses Marion Hutchinson, Becky Morin and Theda Fairbanks will provide light desserts. Those attending should bring a lawn chair, bag lunch and a plant to swap. This meeting is open to the public.

Rumford Senior Center Nickel Bingo 

PERU — The Rumford Senior Center, 50 Main St., is open for sign-ups or other business from 9 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Nickel Bingo is played at the center every Tuesday and Thursday at 12:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Farmer’s market on Thursdays

NORWAY — The Norway Farmer’s Market will be open from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursdays, through Oct. 4, at Witherell Park by the police station.
