FARMINGTON — Selectmen on Tuesday accepted the resignation of longtime Planning Board member Thomas Eastler, who is leaving the board for health reasons, according to Josh Bell, chairman of the Board of Selectmen. 

Eastler has served on other committees in town and is a former professor at the University of Maine at Farmington, Bell said. 

“We are all sad to see him go,” Bell said. “He wasn’t at the meeting, but we did just want to thank him for his service to the community.”

Also on Tuesday, the board wrote off as noncollectable $25,620 in property taxes and $557 in sewer charges for foreclosed properties sold at auction last month. 

While the town aims not to have to write off any property taxes as noncollectable, Bell said, there are cases in which properties are foreclosed on and taxes are never collected.

“This was probably more than most years, because the town has been trying to be more diligent with not letting properties go too long and letting taxes build up,” he said. “The treasurer has been doing a good job of making sure things are squared away.”

The board also received updates from Town Manager Richard Davis on two job openings in Public Works and one in code enforcement, and it approved an application from Jennifer Bjorn to serve on the Downtown TIF Advisory Committee.
