AUBURN — A local man was cited after his dog killed a smaller dog being walked on South Main Street early Monday morning.

Special Enforcement Officer Michael Chaine issued two civil summonses to Joshua Pratt of Auburn for having a dangerous dog and an animal at large.

Chaine said a German shepherd mix that was running free at about 6 a.m. Monday attacked a miniature schnauzer that was being walked on a leash.

Officers found the German shepherd.

He was “very friendly with people but extremely anti-social with other animals,” Chaine said.

Heather Burgess, owner of the smaller dog, said the 11-pound schnauzer died in her arms on the street corner.

The German shepherd, which is up to date on its rabies vaccination, was quarantined for observation to ensure he showed no signs or symptoms of sickness, Chaine said.

Chaine issued Pratt a dangerous dog order which requires the dog to stay on Pratt’s property and be muzzled and leashed if taken off the property. If Pratt needs to take the dog off his property, he must contact Chaine.

The dangerous dog order will stay in place until Pratt goes before a judge, who may deem the dog to be dangerous or dismiss Chaine’s order.

Pratt is scheduled to appear in 8th District Court in Lewiston on Nov. 14.
