Erwin “Joe” Gamble Jr.

RUMFORD – Erwin R. “Joe” Gamble Jr., 86, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018 at his home on Front Street in Rumford.

He was born in Littleton, N.H., on March 28, 1932, the son of Erwin and Christina (Atkinson) Gamble Sr., and graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford Class 1952. Joe also served in the U. S. Navy as a Navy boxer and a deep sea salvage diver. Joe worked as a millwright at Diamond Match International in Dixfield for over 28 years. He had been a member of the Blazing Star Masonic Lodge and the Rumford F.O.E. In his earlier years he served as a volunteer fire fighter in Rumford. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and going to Lincolnville Beach. His greatest love was spending time with his three grandsons and two great-granddaughters.
Joe was married in Bayonne, N.J., on Aug. 30, 1955 to Doris Sawicki who died in Rumford on Sept. 30, 2018. Survivors include three daughters, Cheryl Dickson and husband Erik of Dixfield, Donna Easter and husband Mike of Auburn, and Robyn Davie and husband Bradley of Indian River, Michigan; grandsons Bradley Davie, Jr., Joseph E. Davie, and Adam Easter; two great-granddaughters, Brooklynn Easter and Cheyenne Autumn Rain Davie; a brother Thomas G. Gamble and wife Veronica of Greenville, S.C.; and was predeceased by his parents, wife, twin sister Joyce Blair and sister Barbara Shea.

Funeral services will be private and held at the family’s convenience. Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Rumford, Maine. Arrangements are under the care of the MEADER & SON FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION AND MONUMENT SERVICES, 3 Franklin Street, P. O. Box 537, Rumford, Maine.
