AUBURN – Rachel R. Whitten, 81, of Auburn, passed away with her family at her side on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018, at the Sarah Frye Home in Auburn. She was born in St. Agatha, Maine, the daughter of Patrick and Ann Plourde Chasse, on August 3, 1937.

Upon moving to the L-A area she was educated locally and graduated from Lewiston High School, class of 1955. Rachel was married in Lewiston on Sept. 5, 1959, to William F. Whitten, who died in Lewiston on August 7, 2001.

She worked as a salesperson at Anderson-Little in Lewiston and was a devout catholic as a member of the St. Joseph’s parish and then Holy Family parish. Just a few of her hobbies were sewing, gardening, cooking, and candlepin bowling. But her greatest love was for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, where any reason for a get-together was pursued and celebrated. Survivors include four sons, Stephen and his wife Brigitte of Lewiston, David and his wife Anna of Newton, Mass., James and his wife April of Lewiston, and Eric and his wife Amy of Naples, Maine, three daughters Linda and her husband Randall Shrader of Fredericksburg, Va., Rita and her husband Charles Humphrey of Oxford, and Diane Whitten of Lewiston; grandchildren Alex, Lauren and Luke Shrader of Virginia, Celia Mawhinney and her husband Angus of Sabattus, Candace Whitten of Lewiston, Allison Lilly and her husband Nate of Litchfield, Jordan Gauthier of Oxford, Gina and Alissa Whitten of Newton, Mass., Katie Ritchie of Indiana, Melissa Ritchie of Lewiston, Matthew, Patrick and Ryan Whitten of Lewiston, Stephanie Ford and her husband Martin of Lewiston, and Michael and Benjamin Whitten of Naples; six great-grandchildren, Dillon, Brandon, Victoria, Landen, Addison, and Martin James. Besides being pre-deceased by her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Fern and Edward Chasse and two sisters, Bernadette Turcotte and Yvette Martin.

Visitation will be held at the Albert & Burpee Funeral Home, 253 Pine St., Lewiston, ME, 04240 on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018, at Holy Family Church at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. The family would like to thank all of the staff at the Sarah Frye Home who provided exceptional care and to Beacon Hospice for the love and attention given to Rachel.
