RUMFORD — The early winter weather is taking a toll on the road salt budget, Superintendent Michael Mills told selectmen last week.
At Thursday’s board meeting, Mills estimated about a third of the money designated for materials and supplies has been spent, most of it for salt. He said November was comparable to a typical January for spending.
Town Manager Linda-Jean Briggs later noted that as of Dec. 7, 30.68 percent, or $59,173, has been spent on materials and supplies, including $56,173 of it for salt.
The winter roads account, which pays for plowing, has spent $133,565, or 18.23 percent of the account, she said.
In other business, selectmen voted 5-0 to approve a $10,000 loan from the town’s Urban Development Action Grant to John Bartash of Bartash Card & Gift for help with inventory. The loan is for three years at 6 percent interest.
Following separate public hearings, the board approved a taxi cab license for River Valley Taxi of 242 Waldo St., and a liquor license for American Legion Post 24.
