KINGFIELD — School Administrative District 58 is facing winter challenges that have put a chill on its budget.

Superintendent Susan Pratt told directors Thursday evening that cold weather has increased costs for maintenance, heating and related expenses. For example, the Strong Elementary School roof was shoveled recently by professionals.

The flat roof was rebuilt in 1997 and is sturdy, but this winter’s early snow combined with recent heavy rains that froze between snowstorms created potential problems, she said.

The budget is in good shape, she said, but the rest of the winter could present additional financial challenges.

“We still purchase,” Pratt said, “but we get preapproval.”

In another matter, Pratt said the Maine Department of Education promised a January release of annual progress of students and schools, graduation rates, the district’s Elementary and Secondary Education Act accountability and related information.

The SAD 58 board learned the department received significant feedback from superintendents about data errors in preliminary results. As a result, it will delay the public release to ensure the information is accurate and clear.

Some board members expressed frustration with the delay.

“They should be embarrassed,” Chairman Kim Jordan.

In other matters, the board:

• Agreed to change two early-release days to full class days to make up for snow days.

• Heard from facilities manager Scott LeHay that this summer the Kingfield school driveway will be repaved, a fuel tank at Mt. Abram High School will be removed and some of the oldest padding on the gymnasium walls will be replaced.

• Accepted retirement letters from staff members Joann Nickerson, Cindy Richards, Tom McCafferty and Ben Milster.

• Listened to Jordan read Pratt’s retirement letter, which the board accepted “with great regret.” Pratt will retire in June.
