Water flows from an ice-covered hose fixture connected to a fire hydrant Thursday on outer Main Street in Lewiston, just shy of the Greene town line. People have been asking why it has been running since last September. Public Works Director Mary A. Brenchick said, “Letting a hydrant run at this location and a couple others in the city is a standard procedure for maintaining water quality when you have a high residual area in the system. It acts as a flushing mechanism.” Brenchick said water officials plan to run a plastic line from the hydrant to a nearby brook so residents aren’t concerned the hydrant was left running by accident.
