A tractor-trailer crashed in the wee hours Friday morning, knocking over a Central Maine Power pole and shutting down Route 201 north of West Forks.

The truck, which was loaded with bark chips, rolled down an embankment over 200 feet from the roadway in Johnson Mountain Township around 2 a.m. The driver of the truck was not wearing a seatbelt but did not sustain any injuries.

CMP spokesperson Catharine Hartnett wrote in an email that approximately 1,500 customers lost power for four hours.

“Once the truck and debris were cleared, CMP could then go and reset the pole and restring the wire and restore power,” Hartnett wrote. “It takes longer to clear a truck accident than a car accident, hence the length of the outage.”

The West Forks Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident.

The truck remains on the embankment as the company figures out how to remove it. Route 201 was shut down while crews cleaned up.
