WESTBROOK —  Muslim families from across Maine have an opportunity to celebrate this  important holiday this Saturday, May 22, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at a “Drive Up” Eid event hosted by New England Arab American Organization.  This event will be held outside at Westbrook Community Center.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the most sacred time of the Muslim year.  While Ramadan officially ended last Thursday, many Maine Muslims look forward each year to NEAAO’s celebration.  “Families celebrate in their homes but still want to feel part of the larger community,” says Zoe Sahloul, executive director of NEAAO.  “They know they will experience all the joy and cultural pride this important occasion inspires by sharing it with others outside their immediate family.”  NEAAO has hosted an annual Eid al-Fitr celebration since its founding in 2016.

Like last year, NEAAO’s Eid Celebration will be a “drive up” event in recognition that the pandemic is not yet over.  Families can easily drive through the parking area at Westbrook Community Center, where they will receive packages of Middle Eastern foods, toys for children, and be treated to visits by Superheroes.  NEAAO’s colorful 35-ft Together Home is Here RV will be easily recognized from Bridge Street.

Eid al-Fitr is also a time when families dress up in festive clothing, and this year many will also “dress up” their cars with colorful decorations.  Last year’s celebration drew 250 families from Portland to Augusta.
