NEW YORK — Marcus Semien homered again, Alejandro Kirk went deep twice and the surging Toronto Blue Jays beat the skidding Yankees 5-1 on Tuesday night after New York ace Gerrit Cole exited early with a hamstring injury.

Cole (14-7) was pulled in the fourth inning with left hamstring tightness after allowing a sacrifice fly to Reese McGuire that gave the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead. After the throw from center fielder Aaron Judge deflected off his glove, Cole motioned to the dugout and was checked out by trainer Tim Lentych.

Cole allowed three runs, two earned, and five hits in 3 2/3 innings. After striking out 15 on Wednesday against the Angels, he threw 70 pitches as Toronto put together several long at-bats against the star right-hander.

Semien extended his career high with his 38th homer and seventh against the Yankees this year when he connected off Albert Abreu to open the fifth for a 4-1 lead. It was the sixth homer in six games for Semien, whose previous career best was 33 for Oakland in 2019.

Kirk went deep in the second off Cole and connected again in the eighth as Toronto won its sixth straight and for the ninth time in 10 games.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the fourth on a night when slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had his career-high hitting streak stopped at 14 games.

Steven Matz (11-7) allowed one run over six innings and matched his career high for wins. He struck out six, walked none and withstood several long outs to the warning track.

TWINS 3, INDIANS 0: John Gant pitched five solid innings to get his first win since joining Minnesota and spoil Cleveland starter Aaron Civale’s return from injury, leading the Twins to a win in Cleveland.

Brent Rooker homered for the Twins, who have won six of their past seven against the Indians.

Gant (5-9) didn’t allow a run on three hits. The right-hander had been winless since May 26 for St. Louis — a span of 27 appearances. This was his fourth start for the Twins, who acquired him in a July 30 trade.

ORIOLES 7, ROYALS 3: Cedric Mullins homered for the third consecutive game and Baltimore won at home.

DJ Stewart and Austin Hays also connected for Baltimore, which evened the four-game series at one apiece.

Orioles right-hander Mike Baumann, rated the team’s No. 10 prospect, was promoted from Triple-A Norfolk prior to the game and made his major league debut in the fifth inning. Bauman (1-0) retired 11 of the 14 batters he faced.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

REDS 4, CUBS 3: Wade Miley pitched seven effective innings, Nick Castellanos homered and Cincinnati got a sorely needed victory, winning in Chicago.

Cincinnati had dropped seven of nine to lose ground in the NL playoff race. The Reds began the day one game back of San Diego for the second wild card.

They rebounded behind Miley (12-5), who was coming off one of his worst performances during an impressive season. The veteran left-hander allowed one run and five hits, struck out eight and walked none.

Miley, tagged for five runs and 12 hits over four innings during a 5-4 loss to the Cardinals last week, improved to 6-1 with a 2.67 ERA in his last 11 starts.

BRAVES 8, NATIONALS 5: Ozzie Albies hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Ryne Harper in the seventh inning, Adam Duvall took Paolo Espino deep with an early three-run shot, and Atlanta beat visiting Washington.

Albies, who had four RBIs and went deep for the fourth straight game, put the Braves up 5-1 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, before the Nationals scratched back to score four runs in the top of the seventh against Tyler Matzek on Juan Soto’s RBI single and Yadiel Hernandez’s eighth homer, a three-run shot.

METS 9, MARLINS 4: Pete Alonso hit two home runs, including the 100th of his career, and New York won in Miami to give Carlos Carrasco his first win with the team.

Alonso launched a two-run homer in the first inning for No. 100 and later added a solo shot. The 26-year-old slugger reached the milestone in his 347th game, the second-fastest in major league history. Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard did it in 325 games.

Alonso’s long ball in the ninth gave him 32 this season.

Francisco Lindor’s two-run single in the sixth capped a three-run sixth that snapped a 4-all tie. Jeff McNeil hit a leadoff single against reliever Paul Campbell (1-3) and scored on shortstop Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s fielding error with the bases loaded.

BREWERS 10, PHILLIES 0: Eric Lauer allowed four hits in seven innings to lead Milwaukee to a victory at home over Philadelphia.

Avisaíl García hit a two-run homer in his return to the lineup and Eduardo Escobar knocked in three runs as the Brewers maintained their franchise-record 11-game lead in the NL Central over the Cincinnati Reds. Kolten Wong and Christian Yelich added two RBIs each.

Philadelphia fell 2 1/2 games behind the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves, who beat the Washington Nationals 8-5.

INTERLEAGUE

PIRATES 3, TIGERS 2: Ben Gamel had a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning among his three hits and Pittsburgh won at home.

Gamel also made an outstanding catch in left field to end the top of the sixth. He slammed into the fence to take away a potential extra-base hit from Derek Hill with two runners on, preventing the Tigers from adding to their 2-1 lead.

Ke’Bryan Hayes added two hits for the Pirates, who have won the first two games of the series following an 0-for-6 trip to Chicago.

NOTES

METS: New York Mets President Sandy Alderson says he’s had little communication with acting general manager Zack Scott, who was arrested last week on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

“We were all caught by surprise, very unfortunate,” Alderson said before the Mets played Tuesday night at Miami.

“There’s not a lot I can say beyond the statements previously made. It’s a criminal case at this point. Until that’s resolved there won’t be any further comments from us or anyone else in the organization,” he said.

Alderson said he has reached out to Scott on a couple of occasions since the arrest. As for how Scott is feeling, “it’s difficult for me to know at this point,” Alderson said.

INDIANS: Manger Terry Francona is resting comfortably after undergoing toe surgery, his second operation since stepping aside for the season in July.

Francona, who had hip replacement surgery in August, had the procedure Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic. The surgery was to fix his left big toe, which became infected during the offseason.

The 62-year-old Francona hobbled around in a walking boot for months before deciding to leave the team to address his medical issues. Francona will need months to recover from the toe surgery.
