Friday’s wet weather to continue into the weekend

Friday will feature the passage of a slow moving cold front. Rain, heavy at times, along with some thunder will accompany the passage. Some of the storms may be strong, with the low chance of damaging winds. *National Weather Service graphic*

PORTLAND — Showers, downpours, and thunderstorms are expected in much of Maine starting late Friday.

A few thunderstorms could turn strong or severe Friday afternoon. That threat is greatest in far western Maine and New Hampshire. Gusty winds are the main hazard, and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.

A slow-moving weather system will keep the clouds and rain in place Friday night. A lull in the rain is expected Saturday morning.

More rain is possible Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning, especially in eastern and coastal parts of Maine.

Rainfall totals are expected to be more than an inch for much of Maine and New Hampshire. Locally higher amounts are possible, especially in downpours and thunderstorms.

If you’re looking for some sunshine, Sunday afternoon is our best bet for staying dry.

Less humid weather is expected early next week. The weather will stay quiet with no major storms in the forecast. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Hurricane Sam in the Atlantic.
