DEAR SUN SPOTS: You are such an enthusiastic supporter of local libraries that those of us at the Turner Public Library think you will want to share our exciting news. As many of your readers know, we have been holding an ongoing book sale on the floor below us in the Leavitt Institute Building, just a few steps up from the main entrance.

Our latest news is that we are now making plans to use the room for a Children’s Library – a dream we have had for years. We will create a large, dedicated area where children explore, discover, learn and grow with fun spaces, engaging activities and amazing books and technology.

Now here is where you and your readers come in: we need to clear the book sale room as soon as possible, so we are having a bag sale! The charge will be $10 for a paper grocery bag full of books, your choice.

Or, for the extra special price of $5, we will fill the bag for you. We’ll combine several genres or create a themed bag for grab-n-go reading. In both cases, we will supply the bags — we have plenty.

ANSWER: This is thrilling news! I’m so happy for you and for the town. What a great asset this new addition to the library will be. If you need volunteers, donations of books and toys, or anything else, you just let me know and we’ll make it happen.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you so much for your help when I wrote about my 3G Tracfone being canceled. I called the 1-800 number and talked to a very nice person who took all my information. Five days later I received a free phone; no charge for anything. I saved my old number and my minutes, etc. Now I have the old phone. Is there a company or organization that can use it?

I love your column and read it all the time. — Alice, Bowdoin

ANSWER: I’m so glad I could be helpful to you, Alice. You may want to contact customer service at Tracfone again to see if they are taking old phone donations. Some carriers do recycle these phones.

Just some of the organizations you can send your phone and many other devices and accessories to are: 911 Cell Phone Bank (https://www.911cellphonebank.org/, 1-866-290-7864); National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (https://ncadv.org/, 1-203-839-1852); Cell Phones for Soldiers (https://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com/, 1-678-580-1976); Secure the Call (https://securethecall.org/contact-us/, 1-301-891-2900; Medic Mobile (https://medic.org/phone-donations/, 1-415-746-9758.

There are more nonprofits that will take your gadgets listed at https://charity.lovetoknow.com/donate-cell-phones. It’s not a complete list and you may have to pay a small shipping fee but it’s still better than trashing your old phone. Be sure to take your personal information off the phone before sending it off!
