Several Auburn boys are planning to take a swim in Taylor Pond Saturday afternoon but they will not be able to surpass the record of two plucky high school girls who went in during the month of March last year.
50 Years Ago: 1972
Grading and filling is currently underway on property owned by Auburn Motor Sales, Inc., at the corner of Stetson Road and Center Street. Auburn. in preparation for the possible construction of a new building there in the future. Norman L. Cummings, Vice President and sales manager of the firm told the Journal today that although there are no immediate plans for a new structure, hopefully, there may be before the end of the year. At the site located adjacent to the now-under construction K-Mart Shopping Center, trucks are hauling fill and a bulldozer Is leveling. The Auburn
division of the auto sales firm is currently located at 161 Center Street.
25 Years Ago: 1997
Those in the know were ready and waiting Friday for the doors to open at Deering Memorial United Methodist Church, where a collection of items from a 167-year-old Paris farm went on sale. The stone church on Main Street in Paris was the site of the two-day, one-of-a-kind moving sale featuring the contents of the High Street estate of Albert Soule, 77. who is donating all proceeds to the church in memory of his late wife’s grandfather, who served on the committee that built the church in 1908. Outside there were beds and headboards, stuffed chairs and oil burners, a well pump, sinks and faucets, and even a fan from the old brooder house. Inside, tables were cluttered with linens and baskets, wooden shades, dishes and many other household items. Many of the items dated back to the 1930s or earlier and represent the accumulations of several families.
