Ben Grenier, Salma Ali and Amy Smith load up a trash bin Friday with used mattresses collected during the Healthy Neighborhoods Bulky Items Trash pickup event on Bartlett Street in Lewiston. “A lot of folks don’t have the means to take things to the dump; it’s too far to walk,” said Smith. “Stuff stays in hallways and porches and becomes a huge fire hazard.” Over 50 volunteers, driving trucks with trailers, collected at least 300 yards of combustibles for disposal from Tree Street residences by Friday afternoon. The City of Lewiston provided two of the three trash bins, and drivers were kept busy hauling the refuse to the dump. Smith and Grenier are members of the Healthy Neighborhood Board of Directors. The event concludes Saturday morning. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
