100 Years Ago: 1922

H.A. Shorey, Jr., Augusta. Chief State Motor Vehicle Department and Lyman H. Nelson, Portland, members of State Highway Commission were the principal speakers last evening following the banquet held by the L&A Automobile Association and Allied Towns at the Androscoggin Electric Co. building, Main Street. Their subjects, respectively, were Motor Rules and Regulations and Good Roads.

50 Years Ago: 1972

The saga of the Bates bedspread which a Lewiston man tried to give Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, when he was in Maine for the state Republican convention at Augusta has come to an end with everyone satisfied. Anthony J Petropulos tried to give a George Washington bedspread to the Vice President at the convention but was stopped from doing so by security  guards who wanted to inspect the box. Since Vice President Agnew left the convention before the bedspread could be given to him, Agnew thought it came from Gov. Kenneth M. Curtis, so he sent it back saying that he could not accept a bedspread from a man who encouraged demonstrators at the convention. The mishap was finally straightened out and the vice president accepted the bedspread. However, the incident was picked up and sent across the country..

25 Years Ago: 1997

Anyone looking for springtime this past weekend should have attended the 22nd annual Median Iris and Flower Show in South Paris. Flowers were in full bloom at the Oxford Hills Junior High School auditorium Saturday. Young and old turned out to enjoy the sheer beauty of the delicate displays.
