The Mechanic Falls Historical Society plans to feature a discussion about the Penney family from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 12, in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Building, 108 Lewiston St.

Pamela Penney and her cousin, Janne Penney, will offer details, glimpses and memories of one of the most distinguished and heralded families in the region, according to a news release from the society.

John Witham (J.W.) Penney arrived in Mechanic Falls in 1860 and worked as a blacksmith. Five years later he became employed by the Denison Paper Company and remained with the company until 1872. Penney then launched his own firm, manufacturing steam engines, machinery and foundry articles.

His two sons, A.R. and S.R. Penney, joined the company in 1886, forming J. W. Penney & Sons, a family-run business which lasted until the 1980s.
