Gilbert L. Gagnon

SCARBOROUGH – Gilbert L. Gagnon, formerly of Lisbon, died July 1, 2022 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough with his family by his side.

Born in Lewiston Dec. 30, 1929, the son of the late Mathias and Blanche Longchamps Gagnon, Gilbert served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

After working as a local salesman, Gilbert began a new career as a Deputy Sheriff for the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. Some years later, he was hired as the Court Officer for the Eighth District Court in Lewiston. His communication and organizational skills were critical in his role monitoring courtroom proceedings while ensuring that they were in compliance with laws and judges’ regulations. His attention to detail, affable personality and sense of humor earned him respect in his dealings with judges, district attorneys and court attendees.

After retiring in 1989, Gilbert and his wife enjoyed a period wintering in New Port Richey, Fla. Among some of Gil’s enjoyments in life were playing his harmonica, a sunny day, negotiating a great deal and enjoying a lobster roll and his favorite, custard pie. He also liked making people laugh.

While a resident of Lisbon, he was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Lisbon Falls.

He is survived by his children and their spouses Joan Cyr (Jude) of Auburn, Nancy Dubord (David) of Lewiston, Judy Bragdon (Alfred) of New Hampshire and Debra Ann St. Hilaire Sellinger (Michael) of Poland; his grandchildren Jenny Johnson, Chrissy Davis, Ryan Brochu, Marie Schramke, Michelle Caton, Brooke Joy and Ashley Eng; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa, who he married July 4, 1951 and who passed Oct. 24, 2002; his sisters Carmen Hebert and Lucille Gagnon, his brothers Laurier, Richard, Florian, Jean Paul, Gerald, Normand and Marcel, and his son-in-law, Marc St. Hilaire.
