Michael Martin

AUGUSTA – Michael Martin died on July 16, 2022, at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta, Maine. He was born on Jan. 14, 1954 in Lewiston, Maine, son of the late Napoleon Louis Martin and Bernice Alfreda Mary.

Michael enjoyed talking about growing up in Lewiston, Maine and working at the sawmill. He loved being outside and reminiscing about the process of cutting trees and making lumber. Michael was a Maine woodsman. He was born deaf and very good at visual gesturing and enjoyed acting out his life’s stories.

Michael enjoyed music and he had many instruments that he enjoyed playing. He liked to feel the rhythm and vibrations of music.

Michael also loved art. He was interested in drawing and painting, especially tractors and outside scenes and sold some of his paintings at local art shows.

Michael loved working. After retirement he continued to volunteer at the LINC Club and Capital Club House. He enjoyed camping and every year he went to Camp Signawatha. Michael enjoyed the Maine Deaf Timberfest.

As a child growing up Michael enjoyed fixing up Mopeds and driving them.

Since 1989 Michael resided at Motivational Services Inc., Sunrise Deaf Program in Augusta, where he had staff who assisted him to live in his own apartment. He loved his apartment and had an activity room where he was able to make wood products such as birdhouses and play his drum set. Michael loved the outside and enjoyed nature and his community.

A special thank you to Dr. McDonald, Dr. Carlson and Maine General Medical Center staff for the wonderful care that Michael received at the end of his life. Also thank you to Sunrise staff, Capital Club House and DHHS Office of Aging and Disability Services for always being there for Michael. He will be missed.
