Several utility lines near the scene of demolition of the Cushman-Hollis Building in Auburn plunged to the ground this morning when tons of debris from the brick structure toppled onto them. The incident occurred about 9:15 this morning as the large crane used in the demolition process was tearing into what’s left of the factory building on the Union Street side.
As the two-ton ball rapped against the structure, large amounts of bricks and timbers were sent across the power lines which run very close to the building. The impact shook lines hanging from poles soon surrounded streets including lines running to the nearby city building. A pole, containing a transformer at the intersection of Union and School Streets was snapped in two, sending several live wires to the ground and across a dump truck parked on the side of the street.
