Garey J. Hodgkins

LEWISTON – Garey J. Hodgkins, 77, from Moose River, died Monday Aug. 22, 2022 at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after a long cardiac illness.

Garey was born in Roxbury on June 7, 1945. He was the youngest of 14 children of Alphonso and Valeda (Thibodeau) Hodgkins. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War. Afterwards, he made a career as a heavy equipment operator and always worked his lifelong passion of as an auto body mechanic. Garey was a quiet but fun-loving man and had many interests in life. He enjoyed hanging out with friends and family, hunting and exploring the northern Maine woods, fishing, four-wheeling, snowmobiling, driving fast cars and a weekly card night of Texas Hold ‘em. He loved nothing better than playing on his John Deere tractor all day.

Garey was first married to Roseanna (McCaffrey) Abbott and had two children, Garey Hodgkins Jr. and wife, Trish, of Lewiston, and Patricia Thurston and husband, John, of South Paris.

Garey was later married to Gay (Thomas) Tibbetts in Roxbury. He added six stepsons to the family, Allen Tibbetts and wife, Melody, of Roxbury, Robert Tibbetts and wife, Barbara, of Peru, Clyde Tibbetts and wife, Liz, of Litchfield, Dana Tibbetts and wife, Robin, of St Albans, Evan Tibbetts of Byron and Rick Tibbetts and wife, Karen, of Poland.

Garey was predeceased by 10 siblings but survived by three sisters, Rosa Mae Marston of Roxbury, Leona White of Rumford and Phyllis Harlow and husband Thomas of Dixfield.

Garey has 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life for Garey will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the McCrillis Field at 1831 Roxbury Rd., Roxbury. Arrangements are under the direction of the Meader & Son Funeral Home 3 Franklin St., Rumford.
