AUBURN — The Chewonki Foundation is set to present Fins & Flippers at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, in the Androscoggin Community Room at Auburn Public Library at 49 Spring St.
This presentation will begin with examining the four major groups of marine mammals, their special adaptations for keeping warm, finding food, and breathing air in the marine environment, and the many threats they face. Attendees will then work together as a group to reconstruct a Pilot Whale skeleton. Reassembling this once-living puzzle creates an ideal format for discovery and discussion of the relationships between form and function, according to a news release from the library.
Chewonki is a school, camp and environmental education organization based in Wiscasset that inspires transformative growth, teaches appreciation and stewardship of the natural world, and challenges people to build thriving, sustainable communities throughout their lives. This program is one of their Traveling Natural History Programs.
Fins & Flippers is presented as part of library’s Adult Summer Reading Program, “Oceans of Possibilities” wherein adults have been exploring Maine’s waterways. Although an adult program, children 8 and older are welcome and encouraged to attend with an adult. This program will take place in person, and for planning purposes, registration is required.
