The Red Sox bullpen has been a mess all season, and after Sunday’s latest meltdown the club is set to make significant changes heading into the final month.

The Red Sox are designating left-hander Austin Davis and right-hander Hirokazu Sawamura for assignment. In their place the club promoted righties Zack Kelly and Kaleb Ort from Triple-A Worcester, and with rosters set to expand from 26 to 28 on Thursday the Red Sox may have an opportunity to make additional changes soon.

Kelly, 27, is set to make his big league debut after five years in the minor leagues. A former Division II pitcher at Newberry College in South Carolina, Kelly signed with the Oakland Athletics’ organization as an undrafted free agent in 2017 for $500 and later joined the Los Angeles Angels. He signed with the Red Sox in January 2021 after missing the prior year due to the pandemic and elbow surgery, and this season he earned an invite to big league spring training and is currently 6-3 with a 2.72 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 49.2 innings at Triple-A.

Ort, 30, has some big league experience under his belt but has yet to enjoy sustained MLB success. This season he has a 9.00 ERA in 15 innings over 12 appearances, though that number is somewhat skewed by one particularly bad outing where he allowed eight runs on seven hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning. Ort has been much better at Triple-A, going 2-2 with a 2.88 ERA and 16 saves over 40.2 innings in Worcester.

Originally acquired at last summer’s trade deadline for Michael Chavis, Davis got off to an excellent start this season before falling apart during the second half.

The lefty was one of Boston’s best relievers throughout the spring, holding an ERA as low as 1.46 as of June 12, but since July 16 he’s posted a gruesome 11.81 ERA, allowing opposing batters to hit .343 with a .972 OPS against him.

Sawamura, meanwhile, boasts overall numbers that don’t look bad but which are somewhat misleading. He has a 3.73 ERA and has held opposing batters to a .224 average, but he also has wildly disparate home/away splits and for whatever reason has consistently gotten crushed at Fenway Park.

Sawamura’s road ERA is 0.84 and his home ERA was 5.08, and the last straw came Sunday when he allowed three runs in the sixth inning to give Tampa Bay what proved an insurmountable lead.

DIAMONDBACKS: Highly regarded prospect Corbin Carroll is expected to make his big league debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night.

The 22-year-old outfielder hit .303 with 22 doubles, eight triples, 23 homers, 61 RBI and had 31 stolen bases over 91 games split between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

Carroll has become one of the game’s consensus top prospects since being taken with the No. 16 overall pick by the Diamondbacks in 2019. His promotion continues the D-backs’ push to move prospects – like fellow outfielders Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas – to the big leagues as they continue their rebuild.

The D-backs sent outfielder Jordan Luplow to Triple-A to make room for Carroll.

CUBS: The Chicago Cubs put right-hander Adrian Sampson and left-hander Justin Steele on the restricted list before opening a three-game series at Toronto.

Foreign nationals who aren’t vaccinated against COVID-19 aren’t allowed to enter Canada, save for limited exceptions that require a 14-day quarantine.

Chicago added left-hander Brendon Little as a substitute player. Little was 3-3 with a 4.15 ERA in 29 relief appearances at Triple-A Iowa, recording one save in two chances.

DODGERS: The Los Angeles Dodgers put All-Star pitcher Tony Gonsolin on the injured list because of a strained right forearm, making the move as a precaution hours before his scheduled start against the Miami Marlins.

Pitching more than he ever has in his career, Gonsolin is tied for the big league lead with 16 victories. His injury is the latest for a rotation that’s helped the Dodgers post the best record in the majors.

DODGERS 3, MARLINS 2: Freddie Freeman drove in the go-ahead run with a grounder in the top of the 10th inning, Chris Martin escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom half and Los Angeles won at Miami.

Trea Turner had his 1,000th career hit with an infield single against reliever Huascar Brazoban (0-1) to begin the Dodgers 10th, advancing automatic runner Cody Bellinger to third.

Freeman hit a grounder to first baseman Charles Leblanc, who got a forceout at second as Bellinger scored. Freeman had two earlier hits and leads the majors with 163.

BLUE JAYS 5, CUBS 4: Danny Jansen hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning and singled home the winning run in the 11th as Toronto  overcame a four-run deficit to defeat visiting Chicago.

Jansen connected off Erich Uelmen for his 11th homer, then won it with a base hit to left field against Mark Leiter Jr. (2-6) that scored Matt Chapman from second base and ended Toronto’s three-game skid.

Toronto tied it 4-all in the eighth when Cavan Biggio hit a two-out double off Manuel Rodriguez and scored on Chapman’s single.
