A 94-year-old Massachusetts man died Monday after the car he was riding in hit a traffic light pole on Main Street in Saco.

Saco police say Joan Van Dorn, 87, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was driving around a curve when her 2022 Mercedes jumped the curb and struck a light pole near 100 Main St. around 4:55 p.m.

Deputy Chief Corey Huntress said Allan Zenowitz, also of Cambridge, died at the scene from his injuries. Dorn was taken to Maine Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

Zenowitz was a retired lawyer, longtime public servant and federal employee. He was a retired brigadier general in the Army Reserve, directed the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency starting in the ’60s, then led a regional FEMA office before working in civil defense in Washington, D.C., according to a 2004 profile in the Boston Globe.

In the aftermath of 9/11, early in his retirement, he was appointed to a subcommittee under the Homeland Security Council.

Saco police are still investigating the cause of the crash and have not said if they suspect impairment.
