Nancy Cecil, managing director of the Sanctuary at Maple Hill Farms in Auburn, leads Auggie, a 26-year-old standard bred horse, to the “Sunday pasture” Wednesday for an afternoon romp. Auggie wears a fly mask to keep flies off of his face but still allows him to see. The farm has retired horses, some in their 30s, who do more gentle work, including helping children participate in Special Olympics. “We keep them as youthful as we can,” Cecil said.
