Two drivers were killed Monday in a head-on collision in Aroostook County.

Route 1 in Westfield was closed to traffic for several hours after the collision.

Cpl. Dennis Quint of the Maine State Police identified the victims in a statement as 41-year-old April Kellerhals of Littleton and 81-year-old Dale Drake of Presque Isle. Quint said Drake crossed into the opposite lane on a corner and struck Kellerhals’ vehicle head-on.

Kellerhals was taken by ambulance to Northern Light AR Gould Hospital in Presque Isle where she was pronounced dead. Drake died at the scene. A witness told police that they saw Drake speeding and not staying in his travel lane.

State police closed Route 1 for several hours in both directions while they investigated. The crash was reported at 3:49 p.m.
