Carroll “Scrib” Scribner

AUBURN – Carroll passed away quietly on Feb. 15, 2023, after a brief illness at Clover Health Care in Auburn. He lived a long, full life with many successes.

Born in Portland Oct. 16, 1935, during the onset of WWII, he constantly sought to make things better for his family. Attending Portland schools and graduating at 16 years old, he went on to Gorham State Teachers’ College, receiving his baccalaureate in 1956. He then began his career in teaching. He received his Master’s degree in 1968 and became an elementary school principal. He was the administrator of many Lewiston schools over the years including Montello, Pettingill, Frye, Jordan, Wallace, St. Mary’s, and finally Longley. He retired in 1998 after 41 years of service.

Carroll was very proud of his civic involvement. He joined the Masons in 1964, serving in a number of positions until 2023. He was also a Shriner from 1975 to 2023 and held many offices throughout his tenure. His last office was as the Potentate of Sahib Temple in Sarasota, Fla., 2016 a position he served with deep pride.

Carroll was also a man of duty and served in the Army National Guard from 1952 to 1987. He began his military service as a private and retired 34 years later as a field grade officer, USAR. His assignments included rifleman, platoon leader, tank commander, battalion staff officer, military instructor, and all duties assigned.

He was predeceased by his parents, Philip and Bessie; many brothers and sisters; and his oldest son, Marc Scribner. He is survived by Sandra Scribner, his loving wife of 50 years, his sister Joanne Sparks, his brother James Scribner and his wife Natalie. He is also survived by his daughter Laurel Grant and her husband Donald, daughter Kristine Cornish and her husband James, son Donald Scribner and his wife Pamela. Surviving grandchildren are Christopher Grant and Ruth Anne Kowalski, Kari Gagnon and her husband Dr. RJ Gagnon, Katie James and her husband Andrew, Michael Scribner, Alexander Scribner, Carly Cornish, and Blaine Cornish. His great-grandchildren who were the absolute light of Carroll’s life were Landon Grant, Parker Grant, Rowan Grant, and Everett Grant.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date as well as a military funeral in the spring.
