Melanie Therrien sits in her Lewiston studio storage room Wednesday on International Women’s Day with paintings of famous female painters. Therrien, who teaches art classes at her studio, Wicked Illustrations, at 140 Canal St., was inspired to start the project after she asked her students to name artists they knew. They named several men but couldn’t name any women “except for Frida Kahlo, because I have her up all over the studio.” The portraits, from left, are Plautilla Nelli, Amrita Sher-Gil, a self-portrait of Therrien, Marianne North, Lois Mailou Jones, Georgia O’Keeffe, Hilma af Klint and Tamara De Lempicka. Therrien will display works in her studio during the Downtown Lewiston Art District’s Art Stroll on March 18. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
