MECHANIC FALLS — Town Manager Vic Hodgkins advised the Town Council on Monday evening that the town will get $100,00 more in state revenue than anticipated, lowering the proposed $1.84 million amount that taxpayers would be responsible for in the 2023-24 municipal budget.

That’s an 8.7% increase from the $1.57 million taxpayers paid for 2022-23.

The total proposed municipal budget for fiscal 2023-24 is $3.61 million, of which $1.84 million is to be raised by the taxpayers. The balance of $1.77 million will come from state allocation, fees and $380,000 from the town’s General Fund balance.

The current year’s budget is $3.16 million, of which $1.57 was funded by the taxpayers.

Councilors were also advised by Mary Martin, chairwoman of the Regional School Unit 16 board of directors, that the district will receive an additional $385,000 from the state for the 2023-24 fiscal year. The school budget will be presented to the board Monday, she said.

In other business, the council approved the Girl Scouts’ initiative to have the town apply for a rectangular rapid flashing beacon on the crosswalk on Lewiston Street between the municipal building and the sidewalk. If the application is accepted, the town would receive one free pair of lights.

After the Maine Department of Transportation approves the placement, the town would be responsible to install the lights for between $5,000 and $10,000.

The council also approved the Permit Fee Schedule for the Code Enforcement Office submitted by Ryan Smith, code enforcement officer.

Hodgkins was authorized by the council to get the best possible rate for electric supply with Maine Power Options for 48 months.

The council signed the annual Town Meeting warrant that will go before voters at the polls Tuesday, June 13.

Spencer Group Paving’s bid of $121,615 was accepted for road paving if the municipal budget passes June 13.
