Verrill “Val” Sidney Taylor

SARASOTA, Fla. – Verrill “Val” Sidney Taylor, 84, of Sarasota, Fla., passed away peacefully Feb. 24, 2023.

Val was born to Harold and Winifred Hamlin Taylor on July 29, 1938, in Temple. He graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn in 1956.

He served as a radioman in the Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and then made a career in sales of tires and welding equipment.

Val had many interests and hobbies. He served as a certified Hike Leader for the Appalachian Mountain Club specializing in winter hiking, was an AT trail maintainer, a Boy Scout Leader, a Ham Radio Operator, sang in the Androscoggin Chorale, and in barbershop.

During his years in Sarasota, Fla., Val served as a volunteer at Resurrection House, a day center for the homeless, with his wife, Martha; was an usher at Church of the Redeemer Episcopal; and served on two mission trips to the Dominican Republic. He was well-known for his sense of humor, and his way with children.

Val was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Regina Dyke, of Skowhegan.

He is survived by his wife, Martha; sons Stephen Taylor (Robin) and Jeff Taylor, daughters Tammy Taylor White (Rusty) and Wendy Taylor, stepsons Mark and Andy Haner (Layla); grandchildren, Gordon and Grace White and Tabitha Taylor and step-grandchildren, Mathew, Grace, Blake, and Emory Haner.

Val was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, and grandfather, and we will miss him.
