The bloom of Syringa reticulata, or tree lilac, is the latest blooming lilac species and lasts until late June/early July. Its fragrance is as delicate as its petals. According to McLaughlin Gardens’ Horticulturist Corey Kotfila, the tree can grow 20 feet or taller. It should be planted in average to well-drained soil. Kotfila says the lilac tree has an aggressive root system and is likely to spread in wet areas so it best to not plant near natural streams or ponds. Syringa reticulata is among the estimated 125 lilac species cultivated at McLaughlin Gardens and is in full bloom now. Nicole Carter / Advertiser Democrat
