LOS ANGELES — Rookie right-hander Bobby Miller threw a career-best seven innings of three-hit ball, and the Los Angeles Dodgers avoided a four-game sweep with a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday in a meeting of the NL’s top two teams.

Miguel Rojas had an RBI double and Mookie Betts added a run-scoring single in the fifth for the Dodgers, who prevented Atlanta from sweeping a four-game series at Dodger Stadium for the first time. James Outman hit an RBI single in the eighth for Los Angeles.

Matt Olson belted his 44th home run in the seventh to pull even with Shohei Ohtani for the major league lead, but Atlanta’s six-game winning streak ended with only its second loss during a 10-game West Coast trip. The Braves still have the majors’ best record at 90-46.

Miller (9-3) underlined his ace potential, retiring 16 consecutive Braves between Marcell Ozuna’s double in the second and Olson’s homer, then finished the seventh to a standing ovation.

CUBS 15, REDS 7: Ian Happ had four RBI while Mike Tauchman and Cody Bellinger each drove in three to help Chicago cruise to a rout in Cincinnati and split a critical four-game series between the NL Central rivals.

Chicago moved three games ahead of Cincinnati for second place in the division and currently holds the second NL wild-card spot. The Reds, Diamondbacks, Giants and Marlins are in a tight battle for the third and final wild-card spot.

Nick Madrigal and Tauchman each drove in two with bases-loaded singles off Reds All-Star closer Alexis Diaz in the seven-run Cubs eighth.

PHILLIES 4, BREWERS 2: Alec Bohm and J.T. Realmuto hit back-to-back homers to open the seventh inning, and Philadelphia avoid being swept in Milwaukee despite getting held hitless until the sixth inning.

Wade Miley silenced the Phillies for much of the day as the Brewers built a 2-0 lead. He didn’t allow a hit until Trea Turner was credited with a two-out single in the sixth on a ball that went off the glove of third baseman Andruw Monasterio. Nick Castellanos followed with an RBI double.

Bohm led off the seventh by sending a 2-1 changeup over the wall in left-center. Realmuto followed with a 443-foot drive to center off a 1-0 cutter as he homered for a second straight game.

MARLINS 6, NATIONALS 4: Luis Arráez led off the game with a home run and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error in the ninth inning as visiting Miami completed its first four-game sweep of Washington.

Sandy Alcantara worked eight strong innings as the Marlins moved three games over .500 in September for the first time in a full season since they were 73-69 in 2010. Miami is tied with San Francisco and Arizona for the third and final wild-card berth in the National League.

CARDINALS 6, PIRATES 4: Jordan Walker homered and Zack Thompson tossed seven effective innings to lead St. Louis to a win at home.

Nolan Gorman added a two-run single for the Cardinals, who avoided a three-game sweep.

PADRES 4, GIANTS 0: Juan Soto homered for the third straight game and Manny Machado also connected for San Diego, which won the final three games of a four-game series against visiting San Francisco.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

YANKEES 6, ASTROS 1: Prized rookie Jasson Domínguez hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning to help New York complete a three-game sweep in Houston.

It was the second home run in three career games for the 20-year-old Domínguez, who became the youngest Yankees player to go deep in his major league debut Friday night when he hit a two-run shot off Justin Verlander in his first at-bat.

Houston’s weekend slide left the Astros a game behind Seattle and tied for second with Texas in a tight AL West race.

RANGERS 6, TWINS 5: Adolis García homered leading off the bottom of the ninth inning after striking out his first four times up, lifting struggling Texas to a victory over visiting Minnesota.

García drove in his 100th run of the season with his 34th homer, a 430-foot drive into the second deck in left field.

Mitch Garver twice gave the Rangers the lead with homers among his four hits and four RBI. Texas ended up squandering three leads before finally winning for just the fourth time in 16 games.

RAYS 6, GUARDIANS 2: Taylor Walls drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth inning as Tampa Bay salvaged the series finale at Cleveland, which remained five games behind Minnesota in the AL Central.

Carson Kelly drove in two runs with a double in the second inning that tied the game at 2 as the Tigers completed a three-game sweep.

NOTES

ANGELS: Los Angeles catcher Max Stassi announced he will miss the rest of the 2023 season because of a serious family medical issue.

The Angels placed Stassi on the restricted list Sunday after he informed them of his decision. Stassi left the team during spring training to deal with the family medical issue while he recovered from a hip injury.

Stassi told the team he is capable of returning to baseball activities now, but he is choosing not to do so. Putting Stassi on the restricted list means he won’t be paid the remainder of his $7 million salary for this season, a move that likely will allow the Angels to get their payroll below the luxury tax threshold.

GUARDIANS: Cleveland activated first baseman Josh Naylor from the injured list, getting back one of its best hitters.

Naylor hadn’t played since July 31, when he strained his right oblique in a game against Houston. Naylor was batting .306 with 15 homers and 79 RBI.
