AUBURN — Police on Wednesday identified a man who died after being struck while trying to cross Center Street in a wheelchair Monday night.
Steven Mortimer, 57, of Auburn, died at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston of his injuries, Deputy Police Chief Timothy Cougle wrote in a statement.
Mortimer was attempting to cross the four-lane highway in the area of 603 Center St. near the entrance to Target about 10:36 p.m. He was going against the flow of traffic and in an area not marked as a crossing, Cougle wrote.
He was struck by a 2023 Kia Carnival driven northbound by Bryan Paul, 54, of Altamonte Springs, Florida.
Auburn police are reconstructing the crash, and the investigation remains open, Cougle wrote.
