Two men and a dog were rescued from the Kennebec River after their sailboat capsized Friday evening.

The men were sailing on the north end of the river in Bath when one of the men moved the sail the wrong way, causing the boat to capsize. A witness on shore called 911 to report the capsized boat, said Capt. Michael Brochu of the Bath Fire and Rescue Department.

When two Bath paramedics arrived at the sailboat aboard a Bath Iron Works security boat, the men were in the water and clinging to the hull, Brochu said.

The men, who were from Woolwich and Dresden, were pulled from the water along with the dog. They were evaluated by medics but were not injured.

“They were just a little embarrassed and a little cold,” Brochu said.

Brochu said the river was “running pretty fast” and wind was picking up when the boat capsized.

“They were really lucky they were spotted quickly,” he said.
