AUBURN – Harold Waisanen, 88, of South Paris passed away on Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, at Androscoggin Hospice House. He was born in Greenwood on June 5, 1935, the last of nine children, seven boys and two girls to Matti and Aino Mustonen Waisanen.
He attended school in Greenwood City through the eighth grade and graduated from West Paris High School in 1953.
He was called to active duty on May 1, 1960, and served eight weeks basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey. From there he was sent to Fort Leonardwood, Missouri, for eight weeks additional training. He was sent back to Fort Dix where he served as supply clerk for the 86th Engineer Battalion until he was discharged in May of 1962. He served in the Army Reserve at Bridgton, Maine until April 16, 1966.
He worked caring for Norway Pine Grove Cemetery for several years before going on to carpentry which was his lifetime work. He retired in 2009.
He was predeceased by his parents; and all of his siblings, John, Toivo, Henry, Edward, Eino, Michael, Martha and Tyyne.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris, with interment to follow at the Finnish Cemetery in West Paris. Family and friends may attend a time of visitation prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m.
