New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will not play Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills because of a neck injury.
Coach Brian Daboll on Friday listed Jones as out for the game along with left tackle Andrew Thomas, rookie center John Michael Schmitz, outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari and backup tackle Matt Peart.
“I think he’s getting better but not good enough to play for this game,” Daboll said Friday of Jones, who has been sacked 28 times this season.
Veteran backup Tyrod Taylor, who spent three seasons with the Bills, will start for New York, his first start since late in 2021 with Houston. Tommy DeVito, an undrafted free agent out of Illinois, either will be elevated from the practice squad or signed to the roster to be his backup.
“Tyrod’s a pro,” Daboll said. “He comes out every day and approaches it the right way in the backup situation, but he always approaches it as if he’s the starter. He’s had a good week, he’s prepared well, but he does that every week.”
The Giants have given up a league-high 30 sacks and the concern about the line increased over the past two days when right tackle Evan Neal sustained an ankle injury. The seventh-pick in last year’s draft practiced on a limited basis on Thursday and did not practice Friday. He was listed as questionable for the game.
BROWNS: Two weeks after Deshaun Watson surprised them before kickoff by saying he couldn’t play with a shoulder injury, the Browns officially ruled the quarterback out Friday and named P.J. Walker, currently on the practice squad, their starter Sunday against unbeaten San Francisco.
Watson, who unexpectedly sat out an Oct. 1 loss to Baltimore despite being medically cleared by the Browns, didn’t practice this week with a bruise suffered on a running play against Tennessee three weeks ago.
Watson had been expected to return this week following the team’s bye, but the 28-year-old didn’t practice at all and instead stayed inside the team’s facility for rehab. Approached at his locker, Watson told The Associated Press the injury has improved and that he’s been “doing all medical procedures” to get back. Watson also said he didn’t know if he’ll be back next week when the Browns (2-2) play at Indianapolis.
Browns Coach Kevin Stefanski declined to provide any specifics on what Watson did this week behind the scenes.
PANTHERS: Chuba Hubbard will start at running back on Sunday for Carolina against the Miami Dolphins with veteran Miles Sanders ruled out with a shoulder injury.
Sanders, who signed a four-year, $25.4 million contract this offseason – the largest deal given out to a running back this summer – has started the team’s first five games for the winless Panthers. However, Hubbard has received 23 carries the last two weeks, three more than Sanders. Sanders didn’t play as much in the second half after a first half fumble in a 42-24 loss to the Detroit Lions.
Sanders is one of five players who are listed as out for the Panthers (0-5). Safeties Vonn Bell (quad) and Xavier Woods (hamstring), guard Chandler Zavala (neck) and fullback Gio Ricci (shoulder) were also ruled out.
EAGLES: Rookie defensive tackle Jalen Carter, the undefeated Eagles’ sacks leader, was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Jets with an ankle injury that occurred during practice Wednesday and kept him out the next two days. The ninth overall pick in April out of Georgia has 3 1/2 sacks in his first five NFL games.
Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox was removed from the injury report and should help make up for Carter’s absence. Cornerback Darius Slay missed practice all week with a knee injury after playing the entire game against the Rams. He could be replaced by Josh Jobe opposite James Bradberry.
BEARS: Chicago placed running back Khalil Herbert on injured reserve along with wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown two days before their home game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Herbert hurt his right ankle in a Thursday night game against Washington. He was expected to miss several weeks. He and St. Brown (hamstring) now will be eligible to return after four games. Herbert was leading the Bears with 272 yards rushing.
Chicago also signed quarterback Nathan Peterman from the practice squad to the active roster.
JETS: Cornerback D.J. Reed was ruled out for the second consecutive game with a concussion and will not play against the Eagles.
Fellow cornerback Sauce Gardner also missed practice Friday with an illness and was listed as questionable, but Coach Robert Saleh thought he’d be fine to play.
RAMS: If Coach Sean McVay’s first child arrives on a Sunday this month, Los Angeles will have to take the field without him.
McVay and his wife, Veronika, are expecting “in the next couple of weeks,” McVay confirmed Friday.
When asked about the Rams’ contingency plans if the big day coincides with a game day, McVay smiled and said: “I won’t be at the game.”
RAVENS: Outside linebacker Odafe Oweh will miss his fourth straight game because of an ankle injury when Baltimore plays the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
