BUFFALO, N.Y. — Dylan Cozens scored 1:46 into overtime, and the Buffalo Sabres overcame blowing a two-goal lead to secure their first win of the season by beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Zemgus Girgensons and Jeff Skinner also scored for Buffalo, and rookie goalie Devon Levi stopped 21 shots in rebounding after opening the season with two losses.

Brandon Hagel scored twice for the Lightning, including the overtime-forcing goal with seven seconds left. Jonas Johansson finished with 28 saves as Tampa Bay battled back to avoid being swept on its three-game trip following losses at Detroit and Ottawa.

FLYERS 2, CANUCKS 0: Sean Couturier scored on a penalty shot for his first goal in nearly two years, Carter Hart made 25 saves and Philadelphia beat Vancouver in its home opener .

After being taken down by Elias Pettersson, Couturier beat Thatcher Demko on the penalty shot to make it 2-0 with 2:37 remaining in the first period. Couturier approached the goal from the right with his back to Demko, then spun to his forehand for a snapper that went in off the far post.

Couturier scored for the first time since Dec. 10, 2021. He was sidelined for the second half of the 2021-22 season and all of last season because of a back injury.

The Canucks lost for the first time after sweeping an opening home-and-home set with the Edmonton Oilers.

Rookie defenseman Egor Zamula opened the scoring with his first NHL goal, beating Demko to the glove side 1:45 into the game.

The Flyers kept up the pressure in the second period, outshooting Vancouver 23-2.

Vancouver appeared to pull within a goal early in the third when Carson Soucy’s shot caromed off Hart’s blocker, over the goalie and into the net. But the goal was overturned by video review after Philadelphia challenged the officials’ call on the ice, claiming that Connor Garland interfered with Hart as he was trying to recover to make the save.

WILD 5, CANADIENS 2: Joel Eriksson Ek had two power-play goals and added an assist to help Minnesota win at Montreal.

NOTES

LIGHTNING:  Captain Steven Stamkos didn’t play against the Buffalo Sabres due to a lower-body injury that will lead to him missing his second straight game.

Coach Jon Cooper provided the update before the game in listing Stamkos as being day to day. Stamkos appeared to get hurt when blocking a shot in a 6-4 loss at Detroit on Saturday. He did not play in a 5-2 loss at Ottawa a day later.

Tampa Bay is already without starting goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, who is expected to miss at least one more month after having back surgery. Center Tyler Motte will miss his third straight game due to an upper-body injury.

DEVILS: After suffering an injury in the preseason, goalie Keith Kinkaid was placed on nonroster injured reserve to begin the 2023-24 campaign.

The veteran goalie was spotted skating with the Devils this week as he continues to recover from his undisclosed injury. Kinkaid will now wait to see if a team claims him or if he’ll go to the AHL. If he clears waivers, Kinkaid will be eligible to be assigned to the Chicago Wolves and still attain his AHL rights.

The Bruins signed Kinkaid a one-year, two-way contract last summer. With Boston having Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark in goal, Kinkaid didn’t see much time at the NHL level. But he did make one start for the Bruins after Swayman suffered a lower-body injury in a collision with Patrice Bergeron.

That start came Nov. 12, 2022 against the Buffalo Sabres. Kinkaid turned away 30 of 31 shots en route to Boston’s 3-1 win. He spent a majority of his time with organization in the AHL, playing in 20 games for the Providence Bruins. Kinkaid posted a .909 save percentage, a 3.10 goals-against average and went 8-7-4.

After a six-year run in New Jersey to begin his NHL career, Kinkaid became a bit of a journeyman, making stops in Montreal with the Canadiens and New York with the Rangers before his lone season in Boston. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in February.

The Devils reunited with Kinkaid in September on a one-year deal before his injury.
